Information for Parents before the First Time visits.
Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, recommends that your child visit the dentist by his/her 1st birthday. On the day of your child's first visit, it is important that your child feels comfortable and begins developing a trusting relationship with the Doctor and staff. The first visit should gain your child's confidence and trust. This trust is as important as the actual treatment itself. It is best not to instill unnecessary fear into your child by discussing your previous dental experiences. Research shows this is the number one reason for a poor first visit.
So that we can properly introduce dentistry to your child we recommend allowing your child to accompany our staff through his or her First dental experience, if your child is old enough. Our Purpose is to gain your child's confidence and overcome apprehension while receiving all the treament necessary. Although not recommended for ages 4 and up, if you choose, you may accompany your child to the treatment room. For the safety and privacy of all patients, other children who are not being seen should remain in the reception area with a supervising adult.
It is best if you refrain from using words and sounds around your child that might cause unnecessary fear, such as "needle", "shot", "pull", "drill", “ouch!”, “what’s the matter?” when child is doing fine, “your going to be fine…” or "hurt". The office makes a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child. If your child is very young (6 months to 3 ½ years old), he or she will be examined by the dentist while in the loving arms of a parent. The goal is to have your child be as comfortable as possible during the exam and allow the parent to see as the dentist performs the exam and cleaning.
